Brownsburg, IN May 10,2015: The Nostalgia Drag Racing League made its first stop of the 2015 NDRL- IAM Championship Season at Gateway Motorsports Park in Madison, Il for the season opener, the Quick Fuel Technology Battle at the Arch with 59 teams making the trip to run for the first win of the season.

Qualifying got under way starting with Quick Fuel Technology PRO Gas and the driver picked up from the same runs they left us with in 2014. Local racer Butch Hill knocked on the door first running a 8.515 on his B/G index but Hoosiers Rob Davis and Jerry Wilson had other ideas with Davis taking the second spot running dead on .007 over his B/G index and Jerry Wilson takins his gorgeous Corvette to the top besting Davis lap with a .004 over his B/G index. Forrest Williams and Shawn Grant rounded out the top five.

Hot Heads PRO Comp made their way through the lanes with longtime racer Brett Edwards taking the point running .064 over his C/C index. A solid lap but it didn’t last long as newcomer Gary Williams passed Edwards effort with a 10.035 on his 10.00 index only to be topped in the second session by Tim Reis. Reis, a former PRO Comp Champion took his trusty FED to a 9.024 on his C/C index to take and hold the pole position. James Patrick and Don Loechell rounded out the top five.

Phenix Industries PRO 7.50 roared to life with a side by side pass from the father-son team of David and Justin Shaffer. The elder came out on top of the lap posting up a third place qualifying effort of 7.573 showing the kid who is boss. Jarred Bradshaw took the Freels Family owned twin engine FED to the second spot barely besting the effort of Shaffer with a 7.572 taking a firm grip on second. Both of these runs left plenty of room for someone to sneak in and Darrel Wathen did just that ripping his Willys down the track to a 7.518 lap and taking top speed as well at 180.84. Wayne sears and Pat Malloy rounded out the top five.

The final class up for the evening bring the thunder and that is the Ross Racing Engines PRO 7.00. “Rocketman” Robbie Freels came out swinging running 7.157 on a conservative lap to take the third spot. The pride of Lake Havasu showed up to race in the form of Steve Walczak and he took to the track with a 7.089 lap to take and hold the second place as 2014 Champ Billy Smith led the group with a 7.032 to take and hold first place. Pat Freels and Gordon Horn Rounded out the top five respectively.

Unfortunately, this is where the weather chose not to play nice and, after the best efforts of the Gateway track crew, the rain took over and the race was cancelled. With the weather looking even worse for the rain date, it was decided to call the event off.
The next race up on the schedule is the NDRL June Meet at the Reunion ran during the Hot Rod Reunion in Bowling Green, KY over June 18-20. Please remember to download the registration form online at the NHRA Museum website and submit it.
